Epicurean Kentuckian: Saliditas saltine crackers/galletas saladas

2018-02-24 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.

Many wonder why Saladitas are only available in Adair County on a hit-or-miss basis. They're one of the most hearty, tasty saltine crackers/galletas saladas on the market, found occasionally at Sav-A-Lot, Columbia's only downtown grocery. The big four-part cracker planks allow for select-a-size choices and don't fall apart, even under the weight of a slice of souse meat and round of onion, touches of jalapeno, original mustard, and of course, a little hot sauce, the delicacy on the paper plate at left. - EW

Mobile home taking the public square, not the bypass

2018-02-23 - Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
Around 11:30 Friday, February 22, 2018, all the vehicles in our lane were suddenly pulling to the side of Jamestown Street to allow for what looked like a 14’ mobile home barreling down on the square. Looking back, it can just be seen heading toward Campbellsville Street. It must have had an understandable challenge moving through downtown as traffic began to get backed up behind it until it could get off the square. Back on the street, after getting over the shock, we wondered how City of Columbia signage can possibly be improved so that truck drivers will begin to know about the new bypass? -- LW

Caged garter snake, doing cobra impersonation

2018-02-23 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The first garter snake spotted this year, on branch (does it have a name?) which flows behind the old Meadow Hill Inn and joins Town Creek above the Christian Church park. This one wasn't too fierce. Maybe was emulating a cobra, maybe it's more of a Lowly Worm, the cute Richard Scarry critter impersonation. In any case, this garter snake is is cute. - EW
