Hairy, tap tap tapping in the Tuesday morning sunshine 2018-03-06 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. A few times over the past couple of days it has sounded like someone's at the door, tapping gently, ignoring the doorbell. That happens. When I've checked, however, no one has been there and the tapping stopped. This morning the sound came and it was very close to where I was communing with the cats at their breakfast time. I looked up and there was the woodpecker at work, tap tap tapping on an old maple tree limb in the morning sunshine. It is either a Downy Woodpecker or a Hairy Woodpecker, it fits both descriptions.
