Historic Oddity du jour: re 1930 KY Sales Tax

2018-03-17 - Columbia, KY - Photo submitted by JIM.
In 1930, Kentucky imposed a progressive sales tax on retail sales. In July 1934, it was changed to a flat rate three percent and in 1936 was dropped altogether. The image below appeared in a few editions of the News in late 1934. - JIM

Searching for the entrance to Coffey's Cave, new owners of the Sales (Sayles?) Coffey Cave unearthed this man-made cellar, a structure of equally fascinating interest and great beauty, though it's size is quite small. Inside there is a vaulted ceiling, little else. The property is posted for now, but may be opened in the future, Junior Stotts says. - EW
