All city, county and state law enforcement officials were invited. Cafeteria staff members prepared a variety of soups, and teachers and staff members made homemade desserts. Officers were also given treat bags and cards made by CES students. Historic Oddity du jour: re 1930 KY Sales Tax 2018-03-17 - Columbia, KY - Photo submitted by JIM. In 1930, Kentucky imposed a progressive sales tax on retail sales. In July 1934, it was changed to a flat rate three percent and in 1936 was dropped altogether. One of stranger offshoots of the transition to flat rate was the (apparently short-lived) phenomenon of the sales tax card - in essence, a way for customers to prepay the tax. Searching for the entrance to Coffey's Cave, new owners of the Sales (Sayles?) Coffey Cave unearthed this man-made cellar, a structure of equally fascinating interest and great beauty, though it's size is quite small. Inside there is a vaulted ceiling, little else.
