Sidewalks: On the Pike are close to four feet wide- Picture II
2018-04-02 - The Pike, Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. This photo taken in the area of the linked photo, tells a different story about the sidewalk built in the administation of the late Mayor Coy Downey, that "they undulate like a worm and they are only two feet wide." The fact is, as Sidewalk Advocate Mary Ann
Loy often says, of the sidewalks, "They work." And they are closer to four feet wide, as the hurriedly photographed illustration above shows, ample space for single file foot traffic both ways. What they need immediately is a little bit of maintenance, to keep the sidewalks clear of debris and allow proper drainage. The cost, a very experienced, very competent contractor tells us, "Practically nothing." Paired Photo - Sidewalks - Mayor Downey sidewalks far wider than thought - Picture I - EW

Restoration begins on 206 Public Square, Columbia, KY
2018-04-02 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com. Luci Irvin holds photos of Columbia's Public Square buildings from a different era. She and her mother Sandy Conover are relocating their Nanwood Market from Merchant Street to 206 Public Square and plan on taking it back to its original front and interior as much as possible. They hope to use the original 8’ tall doors stored in the basement and they are uncovering the original windows in the front. (Hattie Lee is probably looking down with approval, remember her shop?) - LW

Snowy postcard from Columbia neighbors in Ontario
2018-04-01 - Collingwood, Ontario - Photo by Jukka Tuuah. We're reminded by neighbors Sybille and Jukka Tuuah from Canada, that we don't really get that much cold weather here. The weather is what attracted them to Kentucky and Tennessee, looking for warmer climates for their horses. Sybille shared this picture of winter in their northern home. She is pictured at right in the Blue Mountain ski resort area of Collingwood, Ontario. She said it doesn’t compare to the majesty of the Appalachian or Smokey Mountains but the Colorado style resort and the Georgian Bay provide a nice playground for visitors and locals alike. She and Jukka plan to be in their Columbia home again soon. - LW
