VFW Quartermaster Ronnie Holt presents check to Adair LL for bats
2018-04-06 - Joe Johnson Little League Park, 197 Doc Walker Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Joe Hare, VFW Post 6097 Commander. VFW Post 6097 Columbia, KY, upon hearing about the need for bats at the Little League, due to a new rule from National, wanted to help a little. As Joe Johnson, one our (VFW) life members and mainstay was also one of the founders of and long time leader of the Little League here, we feel it only fitting that we help in some small way. Pictured above are Andy Watts, Little League board member, and son Ethan Watts, receiving a check from VFW 6097 Quartermaster Ronnie Holt for $250.00. We encourage anyone or group to help support this great group for the kids. - Joe Hare, Commander, VFW Post 6097, 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia, KY

Another Rare Owl? Scott Hurt Wells' trail cam captures blue owl images
2018-04-05 - Near Cyclone/Summer Shade/Cross Roads/KY 163 - Metcalfe/Monroe Counties - Photo Scott Hurt Wells/trail cam photo. Can anybody help with more information on this bird, caught in a two-photo hunting sequence on a trail cam by Scott Hurt Wells of Summer Shade, KY. The pictures were taken at daybreak he says. It has the coloration of a blue jay, as seen in the second photo. Searching the web, there is a "Northern White Faced Scops Owl" which shares some resemblance to this owl. Scott Wells says he will appreciate any leads, any information. "I've never seen a bird like this one," he writes. He called CM after seeing a bird photo included in a blue owl search, but that picture, Of a Bluejay in Flight, by Pen taken from ColumbiaMagazine.com, was included in an album on one of the photo sharing websites. Bluejays are prey of owls, which may be why the photo appeared there. Scott Hurt Wells told us that, as far as he knows, he's not related to any of the Hurts or Wellses in Adair County. Some of his kinfolks are graduates of Lindsey Wilson he said. But he knows two of Columbia's most famous people: H. Hunter Durham, the attorney; and Bro. Raymond Martin - Scott is a member of Summer Shade Christian Church. Scott Wells and I both hope one of the more experienced ornithologists can help with this puzzle. -EW.
Comments, Identifications:\
- Billy Joe Fudge: Thinks 'blue owl' may be harrier hawk
- Derek Coomer: Clues point toward either Short-eared owl or Northern Harrier Hawk
