The writer of the accompanying story posted this photo recently, elsewhere, with a hat tip to a lifelong Russell County friend who gave a starter bulb to him years ago. And with that acknowledgement, the friend shared the beautiful love story of her father, a beloved Russell County physician, and her beloved mother. Her father kept the romance alive by giving a flower each day, one he had personally picked, without fail.

This garden, in a land far from his homeland, is dominated by showy, snowy irises, a reminder of home, and old friends back in Russell County. The starter white iris bulb was a gift from a friend, thus the sweet sentiment of nostalgic memories of Russell County at the sight each spring. Recently, a hat tip to the friend brought the rest of the story, the beautiful life-long romance of her parents, a story which make these iris of incalculable value.

Tick season underway: Proper disposal of tick

Remove any imbedded ticks as soon as possible. Use tweezers to grab the tick close to the skin and gently pull on the tick with steady pressure. Do not jerk or twist the tick. Wash your hands and the bite site with soap and water after the tick is removed. Apply an antiseptic to the bite site. Do not use alcohol, matches, liquid soap or petroleum jelly to remove a tick. Dispose of a tick by submersing it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet. Never crush a tick with your fingers. - Kentucky Department of Public Health

Wildfowers of KY: Formal wild Honeysuckle in bubble light mode

Don't know if proper attention has ever been paid to honeysuckle in its early stage of blooming, but it does make an interesting art pattern, one some may find the most delightful phase of all. I think I like it best. It fits with my Mother's theory that none of Life's Transitions are necessarily better than another. There are always trade-offs. Always Losses and Gains. Usually equal. But it's still OK to like one better than another. For me, I'll look for this again each year. - EW
