VFW Post Commander Joe Hare emcees 2018 Memorial Day Service

2018-05-28 - VFW Post 6097 - 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
VFW Post 6097 Commander Joe Hare was the emcee of the first-ever Memorial Day Service in the new building. In a somber, tearful moment, he related an incident which had been discovered earlier at Haven Hill Cemetery, where someone had taken up and broken the staffs of approximately 100 flags which had been place on Veterans graves there by the Columbia Masonic Lodge and placed in a pile at the entrance to the cemetery. "Somebody is very disrespectful," he said, choking back tears, "It's sad." - EW

2018-05-28 - VFW Post 6097 - 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
It was perhaps the most moving Memorial Day service in the history of VFW Post 6097, which began inside the comfortable new VFW Post building and then moved to the outdoor ceremony, above. The occasion was well attended, with an estimated crowd of 75-100 coming as guests plus participants in the ceremony.

Scenic Adair Co., KY - Independence Ridge Road

2018-05-28 - Breeding/Picnic/Dirigo, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Nearly every mile of Independence Ridge Road's rights-of-ways are maintained by landowners. Saturday, May 26, 2018, in the evening, gardens were being tended, too. On Memorial Day and with July 4, 2018, one might wonder how it came to have its patriotic-sounding name, and if it has ever been more commonly known by another. The answers may be surprising. This scenic byway may be Adair County's best kept secret, and most improved section - the improvements have occurred over many years, but most dramatically, this year. - EW/LW
