Post at entry to old AC Fairgrounds -- purpose?

2018-06-02 - Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Things are changing fast at the old Adair County Fairgrounds site since the property was sold to Lindsey Wilson College. One thing remaining is the large concrete post in the right side of this picture, located to the right of the entry drive as you turn in. It looks to have been there for many years and it would be good to know why it was placed there. Can anyone share knowledge of its purpose? -- LW
