Sycamore Springs: Chicken of the Woods

2018-06-17 - Sycamore Springs - Photo by Cynthia A. Meyer.
(Readers are reminded not to consume mushrooms without knowing all factors in identifications which would require much more than a single photo). "I have seen one other Chicken of the Woods, above, several years ago, but wrongly assumed since it was so brightly colored it may poisonous... It was not until recently when my son brought in a sister mushroom- "Hen of the Woods" - which looks more like a fluffy hen, that I realized what a culinary morsel I passed by back then. - Cynthia A. Meyer

Neighbors are tired of picking up overflow trash

2018-06-17 - S Reed Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
This is not a photo we like to post on ColumbiaMagazine.com. But misuse of this trash bin, most often, it would seem, from non-residents who use it because mandatory trash pick-up is not mandatory outside Columbia. Litter seen on the pavement tends to be blown north, toward office buildings, the municipal parking lot, down E Fortune Street, and, in many cases, all the way to Jamestown. Many believe that Adair Fiscal Court could remedy 80% of the problem by requiring all residences of the county to have a garbage service, as is done in many other counties, and as has been the rule in the City of Columbia for many years. - EW

Mystery ID 79324 Large, orange mushrooms near GRL

2018-06-17 - Near Mt Carmel Boat Dock, Columbia, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
This was go-back picture captured hurriedly and is, with apologies. The mushroom, dead center, which looks a lot like a huge star shaped flower, may give more experience mushroom fanciers an indication of what it might be. The photo was taken Saturday evening, June 16, 2018. It's pretty, and similar in small ways to desirable mushroom, but a perfunctory search online offers a preponderance of evidence that it is one to avoid. - EW
