Changing Face of Downtown Columbia, KY 29 Jun 2018

2018-06-29 - Southwest Corner, Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Kenneth & Doug Janes, Janes Painting, Columbia, KY, are putting their magic to work today, Friday, June 29, 2018, painting the trim and ironwork on the front of Nanwood Market's bright look. None of us who remember the building for over 75 years could imagine what so much natural lighting could do for the interior of the building. It's amazing. A question from history has arisen about one artifact. There's a sign anchor box centered above the "M-A-R" letters. Was it from the days when Herb Taylor had the men's shop there? Did it advertise a brand he carried in the haberdashery? Comments would be welcome, while this business is the center of attention. - EW

Mystery Plant #79495 - Is it dock? Curly Dock?

2018-06-29 - Along an Adair County Byway - Kentucky - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Many of us see the plant and just call it a tall rusty weed. Is has most, if not all, aspects of "Curly Dock," a take-precautions-but-beneficial weed. Anybody help. - EW

Tough week for first responders working in pouring rain

2018-06-28 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
It has been a tough week for first responders with torrential rains sweeping through daily. Bad weather can make everything harder, as was the case when Hwy 61 between Columbia and New Columbia had to be blocked off for the Fire Department to take care of a vehicle fire. This view of the incident site is looking west Tuesday, 26 June 2018.
