Birds of Kentucky: Bald Eagle at Salato Center

2018-07-04 - Franklin Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
One of the captive birds at the Salato Wildlife Center. According to the Wikipedia entry on bald eagles, the eagle was chosen as the national bird of the United States of America because "the founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery (usually involving the golden eagle) was prominent. On June 20, 1782, the Continental Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows and an olive branch with its talons."

Robert Ellis: Packard in Mayslick, KY - Part II

2018-07-04 - Mayslick, Mason County, KY - Photo by Robert Ellis.
A close-up of the classic luxury Packard Motorcar seen in Northern Kentucky. Packards were built in Detroit, Michigan from 1899 until Studebaker bought the brand and moved production to South Bend, Indiana, where production ended in 1956, according to Packard entry in Wikipedia. Packards were never commonplace in this area, but many will remember it Packard sedans were the choice of Mr. Herb Taylor, who comes to mind these days with the renovation of the building which once housed his famed "Men's Shop," and the open touring car owned by Mr. Paul Young, the longtime Frigidaire dealer in Columbia, a machine taken from the garage mostly for Sunday summer drives and for Parades. Paired photo. See: - Robert Ellis: Packard in Mayslick, KY - Part I
