Natural Bridge, Adair County, KY

2018-07-09 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Sometimes nature takes millions of years to build a natural bridge, as with the creation of the rockhouse just a few miles south of this natural bridge, created in a few seconds very recently, in the Third Magisterial District of Adair County, KY. This one hasn't been tested for maximum weight allowed - we know it would hold up a horde of squirrels - but inquiries to people who remember such things led to the discovery that natural foot bridges or 'walk bridges' were once - maybe still are - used in parts of the county. Some, we're told, were enhanced with people-built landings and guard rails. Some even had names. - EW

Mystery 'UFO' #79588, a bagworm, more clearly, another way

2018-07-09 - Green Hills, Columbia, Adair County, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge, President, Homeplace on Green River.
Columbia naturalist Billy Joe Fudge fully documented his observation of a little known phenomenon of nature, the bagworm at work building its 'castle.' or, in this case, its spacecraft. It took a lot of guesses and a lot of clues, but Jill Petrey finally figured it out, before the rest of us became stressed out, trying to unravel the mystery. Above, the bagworm is suspended by a tiny, super strong filament, not visible in the online rendering, and is very close to the ground. - EW. Photos (c) Billy Joe Fudge. Haying time in Adair County, KY - Sun 8 Jul 2018

2018-07-09 - Along a scenic Adair County highway, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Mowing patterns in the gently rolling farmland near the Adair Russell County line presented gentle-on-the-eye patterns Sunday afternoon, July 7, when this photo was taken. Just guessing that the deep green of the circle at right mid frame is simply avoidance of tractor-unfriendly bogginess, not for aesthetics, but both are beautifully accomplished. Incidentally, though the cropping of this photo doesn't show it, views are spectacular in this area of Magistrate Sammy Baker's District. - EW

Wildflowers of KY - Fairy Clothesline in Russell County, KY

2018-07-09 - Along a Russell County, KY byway not too far from Coffeys Chapel church. - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Every day scientists are telling us the mechanisms for how things get from here to there. This photo was taken of black-eyed susans, at the base, but when the photo was opened, the 'fairy clothes line' vine - ID welcome - turned out to be the more interesting part of the picture, the vine arching from the ground to the barbed wire fence post. Would love to see a time lapse video showing how the plant engineered this feat. The photo, taken 12 hours out of sync with its magic time, was taken Sun 8 Jul 2018. - EW

Candy Corn also called Brazilian Firecracker Vine

2018-07-08 - McKinley Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Mitzi Bault.
The Candy Corn plant, also called Brazilian Firecracker vine, is blooming on the lane. This is the only firecracker that hasn't made loud noises that scared the dogs this week. - MB

The American Flags placed by the City of Columbia have been an inspiration this season. They will be missed as they go back into storage until next time. These line Burkesville Street. - LW

Epicurean Kentuckian: Breakfast with farmers market emphasis

2018-07-08 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
Over a third of the breakfast plate features a big, ripe Farmers Market tomato and fresh Basil. Local eggs, one sunny side up and one over easy, with a dash of course ground pepper and a bit of brought on corned beef hash complete the dish. Black coffee is the only thing needed. - LW
