Queen Anne's Lace plant has a visitor

2018-07-18 - Oak Grove Road, Adair County, KY - Photo By Jackie Montgomery.
Observing this Queen Anne's Lace stem, photographer Jackie Montgomery discovered a many-legged visitor inching its way upward. She said she's "watching this creature make her way through a field of Queen Anne's Lace and is eager to capture her portrait after she emerges with wings!" - LW

Sometimes things are quite like first impressions. Moving past the site above, it looks like someone is building a mountain - heeding the great apocryphal story of the ca 1948 report of the delegation from Russell County, searching for a way to turn The County into another Gatlinburg, and duely reported that they had the answer and it would only cost $48 Million Dollars, their recommendation for the fix: "We just have to build a mountain." The mountain was never built, but in spite of that, tourism has become the engine for Russell County growth. NO. A mountain is not underway. This is the site of a new Dollar General Store, and, one might guess, the road to the sky is the new Jamestown Road access point. It's located at the crest of a the rise, with apparently excellent line of sight in both directions. And, safety advocates will hope, the current speed limit of 35mph along Jamestown Street will be dramatically lowered when the new DG becomes a reality. Paired Photo. Stage of Construction, Rollen Coomer Road Bridge - 17 Jul 2018. II

2018-07-18 - Johnson School Road, Gadberry-Fairplay, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Cathedral of the Outdoors Lighting allows a glimpse of the old span, foreground, and the new upstream Rollen Coomer Road Bridge, well along its way to completion. Each new bridge follows a plan. The old bridge is left in place until the new span is built. Almost always, the old structure is removed or blocked off from public use. It might not work here, but - a modest proposal: Wouldn't it be an economical Parks & Rec and Tourism asset if the old spans were turned into pedestrian walkways, picnic areas or community gathering places or sold to private interests to maintain and develop? After all, don't we all dream of owning our own bridge? I know I have. Comments welcome. - EW. Paired Photo: See Stage of Construction, Rollen Coomer Road Bridge - 17 Jul 2018

2018-07-18 - Johnson School Road, Gadberry-Fairplay, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The wing wall on the far shore of Pettitt's Fork Creek had been poured when the photo was taken Tuesday afternoon, July 17, 2018. The bridge is a few yards upstream from the old Rollen Coomer Road Bridge. Silhouetted in the background are two retired school buses used to secure tools on the job, a sitting and a standing (Adair County Road Foreman Terry Corbin) and an Adair County Road Department Crew Cab Pickup. Beyond, a quaint outbuilding owned near a residence served by the new road. The gravel road immediately behind the bridge will access a large dairy shipper. - EW.
