Confrontation at Shakespeare in the Barn. Valentine vs. Thurio

2018-07-23 - Shakespeare in the Barn at Homeplace on Green River, 5807 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by George Kolbenschlag, Homeplace on Green River.

Forty-five residents from at least six Kentucky counties attended a performance of Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona at Homeplace on Green River's Shakespeare in the Barn, Saturday, July 21, 2018. In the scene above, Valentine (Tyler Harding) on the left, confronts Thurio (Thomas Alvey) in competition for the attention of Sylvia (Gretchen Miles). A third suitor, Proteus (Jeremy Cloyd) also seeks Sylvia's favors in the play. Director Robert Brock says the struggle between Proteus and Valentine and the different cultures they must overcome makes this play the perfect catalyst for a western setting. - GEORGE KOLBENSCHLAG

Knifemaker Stevie Butler, enjoying a hobby, retirement business

2018-07-23 - FM2 at Municipal Parking Lot, Campbellsville & Merchant Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Almost every Saturday, Mud Camp, Cumberland, KY knifemaker Stevie Butler, is at Farmers Market on the Square, showcasing the products of Barn Yard Knives, "Custom Designed Blades" an affordable line of cutlery he makes with some really nifty Genuine Antler or Custom Hardwood handles, blades made from bandsaw steel, most with sheaths handsewn from Amish leather he buys from a nearby vendor. He staged this photo testing the edge for sharpness, very carefully, on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at one of the most successful markets. He's a retired employee of Tyson Bearing in Glasgow, KY, who turned his hobby into a successful retirement business. - EW

Epicurean Kentuckian: Tillie's food news, summer 2018

2018-07-23 - Louisville, KY - Photo from family collection.
Seven-year-old granddaughter Matilda Anne is proud of her home gardening this summer. She's also enjoyed travels and foods in different places. She told me that she'd recently had a good trip that included her discovery of a love of "chicken and dumplings." Tillie said she liked the dumplings and the creaminess of the chicken in gravy. I shared with her my own lifetime love of the dish and suggested she might want to try blackberry dumplings, too, first discovered in a potluck dish brought to an event by Thelma Hatcher, I think. At the time, it was news to me that you could do anything other than chicken with dumplings, but I was sold the moment I tasted them with blackberries. Tillie confirmed that she does love blackberries and said, "Hmmm, I might just give that a try." - Linda Waggener

2018-07-23 - FM2 lot, corner Merchant and Campbellsville Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo from Sandy Wilson.
Sandy Wilson has been making sure each donor to the Paz-Holley Project gets a thank you. She and husband Rick, at right, who is chairman of the fundraising effort, believe the youngest donor to date may be Kasey Blue Kessler, son of Tiffany and Eddie Kessler of Columbia. Sandy wrote, "Kasey Kessler donated all of his birthday money to Paz-Holley project a few weeks ago!! He just keeps on getting more precious!! Thank you, Kasey, for your big heart to help these ten sweet children." - SW
(If there has been a younger donor to the Project, we hope to hear about it so we can share a picture - you're never too young, nor too old, to help someone in need. Click read-more for the details. Or if you're viewing on a phone, just go to stories and search Paz-Holley.) - Linda Waggener)
