For first day of school 2018 - a view from Adair Bus 43

2018-08-09 - Along an Adair County Byway - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Ironweed is beginning to show, as it should for back-to-school time, and Goldenrod, Kentucky's beautiful state flower is trying to catch up, with a hay harvest to inspire aspiring students who already know they want to be part of the high calling, farming. Everything hints of memorable times, wonderful eye treats for lucky students aboard Adair County School Bus 43 - (BTW - Today's a good time for parents to pore over The 2018-19 Adair County Schools Transportation Directory - Ed Waggener

Wildflowers of KY - Cranefly Orchid by Derek Coomer

2018-08-08 - Photo by Derek Coomer.
Just sending along a photo of an overlooked late summer wildflower. The cranefly orchid spends most of the year as a single leaf on the forest floor. The leaves are easy to recognize because the topside is dark green and the underside a deep purple. In July they send up a stalk of brown flowers, not as showy as their cousins the lady's-slippers, but beautiful in their own way. - DC

Birds of Kentucky: Cliff Swallow Colony, Bliss Road

2018-08-08 - Bliss Road, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
No evidence of the beautiful insect-consuming birds who live here, but during an earlier visit the adult cliff swallows put on quite an aerial show. The entire tunnel under the LBN Parkway is lined with dozens of clusters like the one above. Didn't get a chance to count the individual nests, but would estimate at least 200. - EW

Paz-Holley Project says thank you to Kenneth Scott

2018-08-08 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Rick Wilson, Paz Holley .

It's Rick Wilson's birthday and among his best gifts was a visit from Kenneth Scott with a gift for the Paz-Holley Project. Rick, the P-H project chairman, thanked Kenneth. He said, "It is great when people freely give. We don't have to try to persuade people to donate. People see the vision and the need for these children to have a good start in life. Kenneth said he saw Wayne and Thelma Hatcher on ColumbiaMagazine.com and it inspired him to donate because he respects the Hatcher family so much." - RW
