Wildflowers of KY - No Maintenance Blackeyed Susans

2018-08-12 - Birch Road, East Adair County, KY - Photo by Tommy Bailey.
These little beauties pop up every summer in the fence row to display their beauty and never ask for anything in return. We never water, feed, or weed them so they're not just low maintenance, they are no maintenance. Each year they spread just a little farther down the row. - Tommy Bailey Photo (c) Tommy Bailey. Wild Harvest of Kentucky - Elderberries ripening 12 Aug 2018

2018-08-12 - County Road near Breeding, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Time was, roadside gleaners would have seen the heavy, glistening elderberries of mid August as an exciting, free edible for jams, jellies and winemaking. Time was when gatherers drove the roadsides when the huge elderberry blossoms made spotting the plants easiest, marking locations in anticipation of the mid-August to mid-September harvest. Today, thanks to wholesale spraying of rights-of-ways, gathering the berries is an inadvisable option here in paradise poisoned. - EW
