Wildflowers of KY: Favorites that will soon leave for season

2018-08-28 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
One of my favorite roadside wildflower bouquets, Queen Anne's Lace mixed in with the beautiful soft blue of Cornflowers, will soon fade away for the summer. I'll wait to rediscover it in the spring of 2019. - LW

Greasy Creek - gem of Russell County to be shared by all - I

2018-08-28 - Russell County, KY - Photo by Robert Elllis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
"I was extremely delighted to hear Robert Cumming report of this place being visited by Kentucky Tourism Cabinet Secretary Don Parkinson. This area is truly a gem of Russell County and should be shared by all. This image was from the same day as the initial image I submitted to Columbia Magazine back in January of the serene, partly frozen Waterfalls at Greasy Creek. It was also taken the same day as the Raccoon picture just posted." - Robert Ellis Paired photo. See - Greasy Creek - bandits searching for food in winter - II

Photographer Robert Ellis contributes scenes on Greasy Creek, proud to hear there is progress toward protecting this area. He writes: "Back in January, while I was wading the semi-frozen Greasy Creek and looking around for photo opportunities, there were a couple of these bandits scratching around for food." - Robert Ellis Paired photo. Old Boiler still in place in Adair County Middle School

2018-08-28 - Adair County Middle School, 322 Gen John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by David Jones, Director of Maintenance .
Museum Piece. Remember these old Fitzgibbon coal burning boilers? This one, not is use, is still in place in the Adair County Middle School, originally built as Adair County High School. Mr. Jones did not say when the old boiler was replaced. Maybe a reader will know more about it, and may have information of it's value as a collectible or scrap material. - EW

Curious cows - friendly, faces along Adair County byways

2018-08-28 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Friendly faces abound along Adair County byways, none with a more pleasing 'cow-tenance' - to borrow from Jim's, "Cowlumbia" invention - than these two naturals, seemingly waiting to 'have their picture took,' with no fuss or coaching. - EW

Historic Adair Courthouse on picture perfect Sun 26 Aug 2018

2018-08-28 - Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Others out walking the Square Sunday saw it, noted it, and photographed it. This photo is cropped to show how the courthouse will look with the "wings" (or "execretions" as Janice Holt Giles was wont to put it) removed. The photo also illustrates a need to bury utilitie lines on the Square. While funds may not be immediately available to carry that project out, the community does need to know an estimated cost, the savings and improved tourist draw, future cost savings from buried utility lines - all the factors needed. - EW
