Epicurean Kentuckian: Tommy Corbin rates Waffle Street the best

2018-09-02 - FM2 at Municipal Parking Lot, Campbellsville & Merchant Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Tommy Corbin comes to FM2 regularly, especially when the Kellis Booth family is set up with their Waffle Street booth. "Absolutely the best," he said. "They are crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and sweet enough they don't need syrup." Tommy Corbin is one of three members of the Glasgow Police Department from Adair County. Also there: Terry Flatt, and Justin Claywell. Besides the food, Tommy Corbin said FM2 is also a great place to meet old friends, make new ones and catch up on news one doesn't hear anywhere else. FM2 is now open Saturdays only through September and October, officially from 8am-1pmCT, but crowds usually filter in as soon as the first vendor shows up. - Ed Waggener Photo September 1, 2018.

Big Time Wrestling came to Columbia 65 years ago

2018-09-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of JIM.
This image appeared on page 4 of the September 2, 1953 Adair County News. A related article, page 10, stated that young Miss Jeanetta Collins had left Columbia about a year earlier to begin training for wrestling, "the world's fastest growing sport." By this time, Miss Collins, then 21, had been on the pro circuit for a few months and had made her television debut just a month earlier in Alabama in a two-fall loss to a seven-year veteran of rope and ring. In a 2012 CM article, Mike Watson noted that Miss Collins, who also wrestled under the names "Bambi Bali" and "Kentucky Wildcat," was a 1956 contender in the Women's World Wrestling Championship, losing in the second round to the eventual winner of the series. The Columbia matches were promoted by Joe Marshall of Bowling Green. - JIM

The Crepe Myrtle blossoms are waving a farewell as their season begins to close.
