Birds of Kentucky: Turkey Vulture in flight

2018-09-07 - Shelby Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
Ungainly on the ground, turkey vultures can soar rather gracefully once in the air. Wikipedia has this to say about turkey vultures: "The turkey vulture is awkward on the ground with an ungainly, hopping walk. It requires a great deal of effort to take flight, flapping its wings while pushing off the ground and hopping with its feet. While soaring, the turkey vulture holds its wings in a shallow V-shape and often tips from side to side, frequently causing the gray flight feathers to appear silvery as they catch the light. The flight of the turkey vulture is an example of static soaring flight, in which it flaps its wings very infrequently, and takes advantage of rising thermals to stay soaring."

New Dollar General Store, KY 55 & Bypass - Stage of construction 5 Sep 2018

2018-09-07 - Industrial Drive & Jamestown Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Appropriately at High Noon, Wednesday, September 5, 2018, where Dollar General Store is adding another outlet in the Discount Variety Store face off with national rival Dollar Tree, it's making Columbia kind of Ground Zero. With the long axis of the store parallel to Jamestown Road, the new DG store has an imposing presence seen from the Bypass. The store is the third for the chain in Columbia. The parent Dollar Tree company, has one store open now, Family Dollar Store, recently renovated, and is building its first Adair County store with the Dollar Tree badge. Nationwide, the two Discount Variety Store chains are considered equals since Dollar Trees successful acquisition bid for Family Dollar. Unlike Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, Dollar General has not yet opened stores in the village centers out in the county. Next store strategy seems to be as closely held, as surprising, as game stategies in athletics. In Russell County, Dollar General's latest construction is in Esto, just four miles from Jamestown's Dollar Market, and almost as close to Russell Springs. - EW

A favorite old home in Adair County

2018-09-06 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Driving through southern Adair County, I always enjoy the view of this well-preserved older home at the end of the little lane. It's the same style as one in my Dad's family in Metcalfe County and reminds me of home. - LW
