The folks from Liberty Nature Center, Somerset, who rescue and rehab injured birds of prey, were one of the popular exhibits at the Saturday, September 8, 2018, Homeplace on Green River Fall Heritage Festival. This feathery friend is a red-tailed hawk. The farm was crowded all day and the rain held off until late in the afternoon. - George Kolbenschlag

Two big events at HGR Fall Festival - Hay ride, music in the Barn

2018-09-11 - Homeplace on Green River, 5807 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by George Kolbenschlag, Homeplace on Green River.
Two of the busier events at Saturday's 2018 Fall Festival at Homeplace on Green River were the hay ride and the music in the show barn. The wagon rolls by the show barn where it appears there’s standing room only. Some were standing in line for the Mayfield Ice Cream vendors, Chris and Marie Anderson, also in the barn. Chris returned to do his usual double-duty as ice cream salesman and sound man for the performers. The festival was pretty well up to capacity all day. There was more of everything at this year’s festival—arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, exhibits and other activities. - George Kolbenschlag

This sidewalk view of a much talked about and appreciated architectural feature on the soon to be completed Metcalfe County Government Center was especially appealing in the vivid colors of near-fall last week. - EW. Photo Thu 6 Sep 2018.

Squarecrow, Pumpkin festival time nigh - FM2 ready

2018-09-10 - Columbia, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
For just $2 worth of pumpkins at the Saturday, September 8, 2018 Farmers Market on the Square, this is a reminder for many of us, of the happiest time of the year upon us: Fall and the fall harvest, the Pumpkin Festival, and harvest Farmers Markets, Ironweed & Golden Rod season, and so importantly, the return of the Squarecrows in Downtown Columbia. These baby pumpkins were 50 cents each from David Jones at the Big Black Dog stall Saturday. Haven't seen one this size carved into a jack-o-lantern but it will be interesting to see if that would work - we'll know after getting advice from Hailey & Tillie, who know best about these things. The vintage made in Japan little man is either a totally valuable antique collected by Aunt Gin Hughes and passed down to Geniece Marcum and then to Linda, or he's a precious 25 cent doo-dad purchased at Edmonton's Village Shop by Geniece and passed down. Clicking Read More accesses the signup announcement for dibs on locations for this year's Squarecrow spots around the public square for the best odds on winning the highly coveted People's Choice Squarecrow award. - EW

Birds of KY: Fishing at Falls on Greasy Creek

2018-09-10 - From Old U.S. 127 Loop Bridge, Jamestown, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The shorebird in the center of the falls was spotted only after the picture of the view from the bridge on Old U.S. 127 Loop looking toward the newest Greasy Creek Bridge, over the latest U.S. version of U.S. 127, was heavily scrutinized. There may not be enough detail to ID, but help would be appreciated. Kayaking would be only one benefit of restoring the Greasy Creek Park - it's a photographer's and birder's paradise. - EW.
