J.O.Y. Ministries, represented by Maggie Coleman, standing, and Lee Ann Jessie, seated, made their formal request for the lease of space on the lot beside the county's 9-1-1 Center at High & Merchant Street for an Emergency Shelter for Adair County homeless or near homeless citizens. J.O.Y. Ministries will provide the shelter building and pay the monthly costs and work with local law enforcement. The request was approved, and in a phone interview after the meeting, Coleman said, "at almost the same exact moment I was presenting to the Fiscal Court, my cell phone had received a message requesting help for a family of four who needed shelter for the night. It's very much needed." - LW

Parker says, 'Welcome to my park' at Chamber picnic

2018-09-12 - Roadside Park, 2310 Hwy 55 South, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Parker - so named because he'd appeared out of the blue at the Roadside Park next door to his adopted home - checked out guests attending the annual Columbia/Adair County Chamber Picnic Tuesday evening, September 11, 2018. Barbara Bryant said the little dog appeared around the park for a couple of weeks, looking lost and hungry, before coming directly to her doorstep and communicating his need for a home. She said she was a cat person so when she brought Parker into her home there was a period of tense adjustment among the pets, but all is well now. - LW
