Ed Waggener was a good cook, an artful cook, and always wanted to have a restaurant like Lainey's, for those who remember the little restaurant that was once Coomer's and then her's. He said he'd serve only what he wanted to, keep it to just a few basics and only open a few hours a day, mostly around breakfast. On the occasion of this photo last winter, he carved out the centers of his favorite rye bread, put lots of butter in the Robert-Flowers-recommended iron grill, on the cook top we bought from Marsha Walker after one of her remodels, and then gently placed an egg in the well of each piece of bread. He patiently tended them, just as we'd seen Olivia Dukakis do in the movie Moonstruck, turning only after the eggs were fully cooked on one side and were ready for the flip - a very tedious part of the process. The little brown bird in the center of the picture looked much like the brown leaves on the grown until it fluttered its wings. Mitzi writes, "I found this picture and have looked and looked but can find nothing else to match this setting that is part of the Old Knifley collection from my Aunt Stella.
