Fiscal Court Budget Committee has first meeting with new CJE 2019-02-26 - Adair County Courthouse Annex, Columbia, KY - Photo by Tiffany Kessler, columbiamagazine.com. It's that time of year again. The Adair County Fiscal Court budget committee met for the first time last night under new Judge Executive Gale Cowan. With the 2018-2019 fiscal year ending on June 30, it was time to tiptoe into the arduous task of developing initial financial plans for 2019-20. These type of meetings are set up so that elected officials and department heads can discuss needs and ideas with committee members. Jailer Joey White addressed the committee concerning his thoughts on the current and upcoming jail budget. Sheriff Josh Brockman (not pictured) spoke with the committee on the pressing need for proper vehicles in his department. Magistrates Greg Caldwell and Chris Reeder serve on this committee under the guidance of Judge Cowan and Adair County Treasurer Melinda Quinn. Quinn explained that during the 2018-19 fiscal year the county operated on a budget of just over $6.6 million and the same amount will be used to base the new budget on. African American History Month proclaimed in City of Columbia 2019-02-26 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Wes Feese, editor, Adair Progress. Felicia Lasley, left, joined with Mayor Pam Hoots at City Hall proclaiming February as African American History Month in Columbia. This month, honoring African American History month, Columbia Magazine has featured students and fellow educators in the photo collections of Mrs. Evelyn Hughes who taught at Knifley, Flatwoods Rosenwald School and John Adair. She was the youngest of seven children born to Samuel Zack Hughes and Effie Staton Hughes of the Rockhouse Bottom/Crocus areas of Russell and Adair Counties, according to her nephew, educator Sammy Hughes, who shared the keepsake pictures. He said there was also a lot of Native American heritage in her Staton family roots and Evelyn's grandmother spoke Cherokee. He described both families, the Statons and the Hugheses, as hard working, church oriented conservative Baptists.
