Kentucky Color: A Perfect Imperfection 2019-03-13 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge. A burl is simply defined as an imperfection in the growth of a tree. However, it is a very sought after imperfection, since it is perfect for manufacturing one of a kind bowls, furniture, gun stocks and other products made from wood. This happens to be a White Oak burl. As far as I can tell, about all tree species can have burls. Other area hardwood burls highly esteemed are Walnut, Cherry and Sugar Maple, among others.
