I remember when he was born, when he was in his bouncy seat at the kitchen cabinet, when he drove his little trucks in the gravel driveway with his Mamoo standing by, when he was the big brother to little cousins in Shelbyville, when he got his drivers license, his high school diploma and when he started a very hard job that sends most people packing - he did it all with his trademark smile and patience with everyone around him. Matthew Alatorre wowed the crowd in attendance at the May Adair County School Board meeting with the demonstration of his special abilities in geography. He is pictured here with his mother, Maria holding Emma, and his father Elias, at left. His fourth grade teacher, Mike Mantooth, at right, said, "I've never seen anyone know more about geography in my life. However, he knows so much more. He can tell you populations of countries, states, cities, etc. He's an absolute ball of fun and has an infectious attitude. Where's the gap - what does Adair need to do for jobs? 2019-05-29 - 210 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Bobby Morrison, newest Board member on the local Economic Development Authority, asked members at the May meeting to consider what's different about Adair County in relation to others around us. He noted that especially Taylor and Russell Counties seem to have been able to recruit and keep jobs where Adair seems to stay behind. He's volunteering to help. The boy who spent his barefoot summers discovering the world of Harvey's Ridge in southern Adair County says he's done "pretty good." He grew up to travel the world, managing setup, recruitment and training of employees for 40 OshKosh plants in various countries. He wonders if building stronger relationships with leaders in state business and industry areas will help, and volunteers time if needed. EDA Chair Mark Dykes added he believes Adair will be more ready for recruitment with the completion of the Industrial Park road planned for this summer. Each spring we always celebrate the loves-me, loves-me-not field daisies and at the same time we celebrate Mom's sister by that name who was a teacher, mentor and protector to her curious little sister Geniece.
