The plaque beside the new flag installed this week reads, “Site of Jackman High School built in 1925. Named for P. Hiram Jackman (1845-1915). Born a slave, Civil War Veteran, Baptist minister, Pioneer in education. This was one of five Rosenwald Grant schools built in Adair County and the only high school for African Americans in this and adjacent counties until integration. This plaque was provided by the Columbia Woman’s Club in 2006." Jackman High, Rosenwald School, now has new flag 2019-07-06 - Columbia - Photo from City Hall, Columbia, KY. The raising of the American Flag ceremony was held this week at the sight of the Jackman High School, one of the five original Rosenwald Schools in Adair County. Mrs. Lillie Duvall, who went to school there, was in attendance. Also pictured are Mayor Pam Hoots, Bonita Lasley, Sylvia White, Bill Wheat and Bobby Bowe. Columbia is fortunate to have members such as these in our community who take pride in preserving the history and heritage of our town. Aubree Layne was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy at four months old and received her gift of life, a heart transplant, when she was six months old. She now is spunky and full of life, energy and joy. Her proud mother, Tonita, says Aubree's favorite shirt is one that says "Team Aubree: An organ donor healed my broken heart!" "There are no age or health requirements to joining the Organ Donor Registry. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join when you renew your license at my office.
