Parents Ann and Toby Young couldn't be more proud of their ACHS student Maggie who received honors for her accomplishments during summer break at the July School Board meeting. Dr. Stephens said in making the announcement that Maggie was accepted at three prestigious academies for students interested in military service and was able to attend two of them in June. Toby is a Kentucky State Police Trooper and Ann is a guidance counselor with the Adair School District.

Mini Day Trip discovery - ferry boat still runs daily

While waiting for our 'Red Barn Barbecue', we noticed a picture of a ferry boat on the wall and asked about it. It's still running in a part of Monroe County that can be reached, from Tompkinsville, only by crossing the Cumberland River on that ferry. It takes you to the scenic Turkey Neck Bend area. At one time, the ferry was considered one of the best steamboat landings along the upper Cumberland River. It is free and is the only state-operated ferry in Kentucky. To get to the Cumberland River Ferry from downtown Tompkinsville, take Hwy 100, connect onto a winding Hwy 214 which takes you directly to the Cumberland River.

Hunter Durham on the job in Yellowstone

Looking like the Marlboro man in this keepsake picture, Hunter Durham recalls standing on the North Peak in Yellowstone National Park looking out on the Grand Teton mountains at age 17. He worked different jobs in the summers before graduating from Adair County High School. One early job was in a canning factory and that one convinced him he'd better go on to college.
This picture is one of many keepsakes in his office above the fountain on the Public Square in Columbia. It is a reminder of a conversation from a couple of years back about the great earthquake which happened when he was on this job.
