Somerset Fountain and folk lore 2019-07-28 - Somerset, KY - Photo by Tiffany Kessler. A rush of water from Somerset's blazing fountain is about all one can hear late at night. Stunning and peaceful for sure. Oddly enough, there's a very interesting connection between Columbia and Somerset. According to CityofSomerset.com, Jesse James and his gang were said to have come through Somerset from Mt. Vernon with the intention of robbing the First National Bank. However, the gang was frightened away when they spotted a number of armed young men standing around the square. Spooked by the youths, the gang rode on to our community where they held up the Bank of Columbia. As it turns out, the young men carrying shotguns gathered around the Somerset square were actually preparing to go bird hunting and knew nothing of the James gang plan.
