A peaceful place to end a hot August day 2019-09-01 - Metcalfe County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. The artesian sulphur well, called by locals "the Gum," on the Little Barren River at Sulphur Well, Kentucky was a cool spot for this Hart County family to visit as the last days of August 2019 passed. The children could romp on the steps down to the water spout and laughter was guaranteed as one after another tasted or just sniffed the water and roared at the taste of the white sulphur. After over a century of constant flowing from the earth, the sulphur water still comes out of the ground with enough strength to allow a drink without touching the spout. The well was discovered around the time of the Civil War when Ezekiel Neal was drilling for salt. Opinions vary on the potability of the water.
