Historical notes provided by Vonnie Kolbenschlag include, "...began as a one room log cabin, produced more African American teachers than any other one room school; 20 public school teachers from Flatwoods. The school was always in session, no matter the weather. Wood was furnished by the community, warm clothes were hard to come by, parents worked for five cents a day on nearby farms..." Artist Linda Cundiff's pastel entitled Tulips Galore is in the Adair County Arts Council exhibit of works by local artists in the Lucretia C. Begley Gallery, Slider Humanities Center on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College. Her artist statement says, in part: "My work is influenced by nature and what I have seen and see there. This is a pastel from a series of pieces of tulips I have done going back to 1984 when I first started working seriously with pastels. It uses my favorite combination of complimentary colors - reds and greens. For several years, I had a large bed of tulips that bloomed each April and May. That's where my idea originated."
