New species of crayfish

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife at-risk species biologist Zack Couch discovered this rare crayfish near Louisville, and it is only known to exist in a few streams in Jefferson, Bullitt and Meade counties. While Kentucky Fish and Wildlife will select the scientific name, the agency decided to auction the rights to the common name.

Business: Doc's Market nearing completion

Doc's Market on North Hwy. 55 is the newest Columbia development and looks to be in the completion stages on the inside - the sign says, "stay calm, coming soon." The new convenience store is located beside Easton Bryant's North Century Pharmacy. If the Pinewood side of town is called New Columbia, might this development be called Newest Columbia?

Adair Beta Club enjoys wins in state competition

Adair County Middle School's State Beta Convention experience was fantastic. Addie Bennett won first place in Black and White Photography and Andrew Zinati won third place in the Science Competition. They both get to compete at nationals in June in Ft. Worth, TX. We are so proud of all of our students. There were over 8,000 students attending and approximate 200 schools in competition. What an amazing achievement. Adair County also received a Growth Award! - Deb Waddell

Taylor County Middle School Junior Beta Club competed at the State Convention in Louisville on January 23 and 24, 2020. Winning students are Viktoria Rosner (8th grader), Jayda Smith (8th grader) and Jackson Hays (6th grader), 3rd Place Two-Dimensional Design, with their banner.

TC Intermediate Junior Beta wins led by Brax Hyde

Taylor County Intermediate School Junior Beta made a great showing at the State Convention in Louisville. Brax (Abraxas) Hyde, 10-year-old son of David and Shannon Hyde, at left, was the only student in Taylor county to get a first place prize - Champion 4th grade Language Arts. He will go on to compete in Ft. Worth, Texas nationals. Pictured with him are winners Grady Shuffett, 4th Place 5th grade Language Arts; Karly Hayes, 5th Place 4th grade Science; and Allison Shofner, Runner up 4th grade Social Studies. Club Trading Pin 3rd Place; Group Talent Champions. The TCIS Junior Beta Club is sponsored by Mandy Cox and Debbie Gumm. Group Talent was choreographed by Rhonda Yates and Tonya Rogers.

House fire on Bill Turner Road

The Adair County Fire Department responded to a residential house fire on Sunday, January 26, 2020, at 1:59pmCT. The residence was located at 66 Bill Turner Road and was occupied by Beverly Kuhn. Damage was moderate around wood stove and was contained to living room area. There were 16 firemen on the scene for around 1 hour.
