Scenic Kentucky: Habitrek Trail at Salato 2020-06-05 - Frankfort, KY - Photo by Pen. The Habitrek Trail behind the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort is an easy half-mile walk suitable for children. According to the KDFW web site, the trail "takes you into a wooded area with several large oak trees interspersed among a successional forest of ash, oak, hickory, cedar, and maple. In the spring the forest floor is home to numerous species of native wildflowers such as Mayapple, purple larkspur, blue phlox, and trillium. Coral berry, dogwood, and redbud make up the majority of the shrubs. The remains of an old rock wall provide excellent habitat for small mammals and reptiles, while both standing and fallen deadwood "snags" host a diversity of insect life and fungal growth, as well as nesting space for cavity-dwelling animals such as chipmunks, owls, and woodpeckers." The trail is open from dawn to dusk. The Salato Wildlife Education Center is planning to open to the public again next week, but the fishing lakes, picnic areas, and hiking trails on campus have remained open for use since mid-March. The morning was perfectly sunny so I was confident of having time for a walk before the weather changed. I was wrong. On the far side of the Public Square I looked up to see dark clouds coming together blocking the sun and took this picture. It occurred to me I'd better stop window shopping in the consignment store and move along. By the time I crossed Campbellsville Street, the barber stepped out of his shop to check the sky and advised me I'd better rush. I felt some light sprinkles. At the corner by the Fed Ex drop, huge raindrops started falling. I raced across Greensburg Street and found protection under the awnings by the fountain only after getting well soaked. The rainclouds moved on as quickly as they'd arrived so I could walk the four or five blocks home and get dry. She currently is staying fit for the upcoming season as she will be joining our Volleyball team and study Physical Education. She graduated from Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas. She is planning to become a volleyball coach. Thais says she is a persistent person who does not give up so easily.
