She attended the University of Kentucky and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993 in Psychology with a Family Studies minor. Her Master of Social Work was received from UK in 1995. Lanham received her Ph.D. from the University of Denver in 2009. Her dissertation was "Impact of Globalization on Central Appalachia Women: Social Capital and Networks."
