Birds of Kentucky: Song Sparrow

2021-06-05 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
All About Birds has this to say about the Song Sparrow: "Like many other songbirds, the male Song Sparrow uses its song to attract mates as well as defend its territory. Laboratory studies have shown that the female Song Sparrow is attracted not just to the song itself, but to how well it reflects the ability of the male to learn. Males that used more learned components in their songs and that better matched their song tutors (the adult bird they learned their songs from) were preferred."

Cumberland County Chicken Snake

2021-06-04 - Cumberland Co., KY - Photo courtesy Jason Stailey.
Jason Stailey caught this Chicken Snake in the hills of northern Cumberland County last week. He said it needed to live because it is a "good snake" - they help control many other pests around the yard.

Jason said, "He was a good sized snake. And they are good to have around. I watched a video of a rattlesnake in a guys yard that he was trying to run off. A large black snake comes along while he's video taping and grabs the rattler then kills and eats it. Most people want to kill any snake they see not knowing many of the non poisonous ones are very helpful."
