Billy Joe writes, "I've seen several historical accounts of our forefathers calling Black gum, the most beautiful tree in the woods. It has everything to do with the deep, waxy, black-green leaves that in early Fall will most often turn to a deep, waxy, black-red. Squirrels love the blue-black drupes that are bitter to our taste buds. Probably the reason our Great Wooded South forefathers referred to this species as, Sour gum." Fungus discoveries 2021-08-06 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Marie Freeman. Marie writes: Another Interesting find. I believe to be "Ravenel's Bolete," also known as "Powdery Sulphur Bolete." Tells: Powdery yellow cap ages red from center out. Yellow pores age to grayish brown & stain greenish-blue, resolving to greenish-brown. Other Information: Cap may crack or wrinkle w/age. Pale cap flesh slowly blues, resolving to dingy yellow & then pale brown. Bright yellow stem may have a ring from membrane that covered young pores. As always with fungus it's a guess. Robert writes, "August is the month when my small vineyard yields its fruits. Typical of the Concord grape is the uneven ripening. My vineyard is purely organic, no spraying of any kind...just harvest what is useable. Couple winters back, half of my vineyard was destroyed by late freeze, but I was able to restart the plants by letting a few new buds at the base of the original vine grow into new plants.
