Kentucky Color: Carvers Past And Present
2024-11-08 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge. Billy Joe writes, "I am happy to see that BW is keeping the tradition of carving initials on Beech trees going forward in the 21st century! In centuries past, those traversing Kentucky woodlands carved initials, names and dates on the paper smooth bark of American Beech, including Daniel Boone."

Sending a hello to Herbert - Herb - Herbie!
2024-11-07 - Metcalfe County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. It was good to get a chance meeting recently with this Metcalfe County attorney. You may know him in formal settings around the state as Herbert B. Sparks. In his North Main Street, Edmonton KY law office, you probably know him as Herb Sparks. If you've known him since Metcalfe County High School days, you probably call him Herbie, and know him as a lifetime trusted friend who always has a smile and a heart for listening. I have to ask him next time what the "B" stands for in his middle name? - Linda Waggener

A study in yellows
2024-11-07 - Casey County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Features by Sharon Whitehurst and Billy Joe Fudge have inspired me to share and name these bright yellows among our beautiful fall 2024 leaves. At left are Chestnut leaves on their way to turning a sandy brown - and they always seem to hang onto their limbs longer than most other trees. In the center are the romantic heart shaped Redbud leaves, and at right are the consistently awesome from year to year Maple leaves.

Whitehurst Diaries: distinctive shapes of Sassafras leaves
2024-11-06 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst.
Several days ago retired forester, Billy Joe Fudge, posted photos in Columbia Magazine of a glowing sassafras he had spotted. Cautiously excited, I googled 'sassafras' and found more photos, descriptions.
Of particular interest is the fact that a sassafras tree wears three distinctive shapes of leaves: a slender oval, a thumbed 'mitten' shape, a three-lobed leaf.
