Farewell to Kyle Harper from his work family

2021-10-03 - Barren County, KY - Photo by Jane Todd.
Co-worker and friend Jane Todd writes, "We all have days when we are tired and stressed beyond anything we have known before. The past two years have seen so much sickness and loss for so many that is hard to wrap our heads and hearts around it all. Sadly, this past week, Akebono lost one of it's own. If you are now, or have ever been from Metcalfe County, the odds are great that you know, love and admire Mike and Becky Harper and their family. This week many have mourned the loss of Kyle right along with them.

"Today, we came together to honor and lift up our Akebono Family Member, Kyle Harper and his family, letting them know they are all in our thoughts and prayers. Today, we were proud to show Kyle's family how much he meant and thankful for our Manager, Justice, who leads with the mindset of God and Family first."

Kentucky Color: Miss Sassy

2021-10-02 - Taylor Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
By Billy Joe Fudge

Go to the Homeplace Trailhead of the Tebbs Bend Nature and Recreation Area, take the Beaver Pond Loop and you will find this beautiful old lady, we call "Miss Sassy". Miss Sassy is a Sassafras tree that has been proudly standing on the edge of a steep hillside overlooking Green River for hundreds of years. No doubt she watched every minute of the Battle of Tebbs Bend on July 4, 1863 and noted the passing of the Longhunters and maybe even Daniel Boone as early as the 1760's.

Miss Sassy told me she loves to entertain visitors, have them touch her bark and smell that wonderful aroma of Root Beer emanating from her soul. She loves to have her picture taken with the children and have them shared on Columbia Magazine and social media.

Note: Root Beer was indeed flavored by Sassafras Roots originally and when you're maybe 400 years old, everyone is a child!

Both the Poke plant and the visiting Stink Bug on one of its berries are undesirable, but they are everywhere this fall.
