Birds of Kentucky: House Finch

2021-11-25 - Frankfort, KY - Photo by Pen.
A male house finch, feasting on berries outside the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort.

According to the All About Birds entry on Haemorhous mexicanus, "The House Finch was originally a bird of the western United States and Mexico. In 1940 a small number of finches were turned loose on Long Island, New York, after failed attempts to sell them as cage birds ('Hollywood finches')," and they spread from there to all 50 states.

View from upstairs offices

2021-11-24 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Guests at the announcement meeting who toured the former Majestic Yacht building were surprised at how huge the building really is and how many jobs may occupy it in the years going forward. It was easy to gaze out the upstairs office windows at the Veterans Memorial Bypass and Hwy 61 crossing and ponder how things might have turned out if they'd won the lottery and been the purchaser themselves. Many ideas floated around, however, it will be Synergy Food Group taking on the lease-purchase of the property in just a week. They received a hearty welcome from the community.

ACES Christmas Trees 2021

2021-11-24 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Rachel Waggener.
The Christmas trees tradition at ACES continued this year. We sure had missed those trees the past couple years! The three ACES trees representing 3,4,5 Grades are finished with all handmade ornaments made by the students!

The students did a wonderful job creating the ornaments. They are so proud of their creations! Students will take home their ornaments before Christmas break. Mrs. Cindy Hancock graciously made our bow toppers, and they were the icing on the cake.
