Birds of Kentucky: Hooded Merganser

A male hooded merganser, spotted paired up with a female in a pond along I-64. All About Birds says that hooded mergansers are year-round residents in Kentucky, and "in fall through spring, head to unfrozen lakes and look for them mixed in flocks with other small divers like Bufflehead and Ruddy Ducks."

Memories of Harry Beard, accomplished skier

Doug writes, "As we are in the Winter Olympics, my father was a high caliber skier!"

The text by the photo reads:
Harry Beard is pictured wearing the ski jacket he purchased in Europe in the late 1940s. The jacket features patches showing the various placed he skied, including Lillehammer, Norway, the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics. At the top left is a copy of the award Beard received for placing 2nd in a downhill race in Lillehammer in 1951.

Mike writes, "Reproduced photo of the original sign at the entrance to the Circle-R. The original photo dates from about 1961 or 1962.

There were many comments on social media and via email about the photo of the Drive-Inn. Those will be compiled and added to the historical Columbia and Adair County files here at the Genealogy and History Research Center."

CAUD awarded $705K for water improvement project
