Mackinac Island sits in Lake Huron, about 10 hours north of Columbia, between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas. Mackinac Island State Park, with trails, woods and the limestone Arch Rock formation, covers most of the island.
Cars aren't allowed on Mackinac Island, save for a lone fire engine in case of emergency. Residents travel mostly on foot and by bicycle, while tourists are moved between landmarks on the island in horse-drawn trailers.
