Kentucky Color: It's Everywhere, It's Everywhere

This carpet of green moss reminds me of the line, "he's everywhere, he's everywhere" in the Ray Steven's classic, "Santa Clause is watching you".
The most prolific moss in the Great Wooded South is Delicate Fern Moss. It covers the forest floor, tree trunks and rock outcroppings 12 months out of the year but is so much more obvious during winter. The icicles are cold, hard proof that bitter cold temperatures do not bother it at all.
It is a highly preferred nesting material for many area songbirds. Just last week I saw a couple of House Wrens checking out Delicate Fern Moss covered rock ledges. Since it is a little early for them to be nesting, I figured they were looking for lethargic, winter insects.
Speaking of seasons, I have a tip for you if you find yourself needing a quick and natural cool down in the heat and humidity of summer. A relaxing seat and recline against the moss covered, North side of a large, thin-barked tree is a Godsend and maybe even a life saver. Comments | Permalink
