Cooler weather and shorter days in September tell the monarchs it's time to head for Mexico. According to the USDA, the monarch is the only butterfly known to make a two-way migration. Monarchs in Eastern North America have a second home in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico
Last night, I noticed a butterfly high overhead, which isn't unusual, but then I saw another, and another. About every minute or so, for over an hour, a monarch or two or three would pass high overhead, all heading roughly southwest. Comments | Permalink
