Kentucky Color: American Chestnut

I found this American chestnut stump ring on Burton Ridge last week. From my notepad to walking stick would make this stump over 10 feet in diameter. This tree likely died before 1935 because of the blight which entered through New York harbor from China just after 1900. That there is still solid wood left from this majestic Redwood of the East is testament to the resistance of the wood to rot and insect degradation! Comments | Permalink
