Billy Joe writes, "I've seen several historical accounts of our forefathers calling Black gum, the most beautiful tree in the woods. It has everything to do with the deep, waxy, black-green leaves that in early Fall will most often turn to a deep, waxy, black-red. Squirrels love the blue-black drupes that are bitter to our taste buds. Probably the reason our Great Wooded South forefathers referred to this species as, Sour gum." Comments | Permalink
