I worried about the little black calf but his mother was close and checking on him in the face of black vultures hanging too close for comfort. For better or worse, vultures are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Under that act, vultures, their nests and eggs can't be killed or destroyed without a Migratory Bird Depredation Permit.
