In the late 1800s, Amos Dolbear counted cricket chirps and formulated a way to estimate the ambient temperature within a degree or so based on the frequency of the chirps. It is thought that he based his research on the snowy tree cricket.
Dolbear's math was a little more complicated, but according to The Old Farmer's Almanac, you can "count the number of chirps in 14 seconds, then add 40 to get the temperature" in Fahrenheit. Comments | Permalink
