Milkweed bugs

I seem to remember that in third grade at Col. Wm. Casey Elementary, Mrs. Keen taught everyone about the importance of milkweed plants to monarch butterflies, and how to spot the eggs and caterpillars on milkweed plants.

On a recent hike through the Grand Allee at Beckley Creek Park, there weren't many monarchs to be seen yet on the this year's crop of milkweed plants, but there was a lot of colorful insect activity on a smaller scale. The red bug is a red milkweed beetle, and the orange bug is known as a large milkweed bug.
