KY Afield Outdoors: Time for reservoir smallmouth

John Williams, longtime fisheries biologist in southeast Kentucky, holds his personal best smallmouth bass that weighed six pounds from Laurel River Lake. Fall through late spring is the best time of year to catch trophy smallmouth like this one from Laurel River Lake, Lake Cumberland, and Dale Hollow Lake.

The smallmouth bass in Lake Cumberland, in particular, are in spectacular condition this fall. They look like footballs, with nearly bursting bellies stuffed with threadfin shad and alewives.
