Bittersweet is poisonous to humans, but imporant in the diets of some birds. Thanks to a reader, we're correcting the earlier mis-identification of this plant, which should be Celastrus scandens, commonly called American bittersweet.
According to the Wikipedia entry for Solanum dulcamara, it "has been valued by herbalists since ancient Greek times. In the Middle Ages the plant was thought to be effective against witchcraft, and was sometimes hung around the neck of cattle to protect them from the 'evil eye'." Comments | Permalink
