History: remembering local icon Bill Beard

2019-03-11- Photo by Mitzi Bault, CM Staff
Adair County icon Bill Beard was always trying to pull a trick on townspeople in his later years. He was referred to as "quite a character". At first, most of us kids were kind of scared of him - he came around often to see my Daddy. The only time Bill ever scared me was when I was trying to speak to him -- he was a big, tall man -- and he just simply picked me up, explaining it hurt his back bending over to talk to me -- a short girl, even shorter than I am now. - MB

Soon this view will be blocked by new leaves

This view of Columbia's historic Courthouse Clock Tower from the top of "Old Grade School Hill" in Columbia, will soon be blocked out by leaves of late spring and summer. Trees are budding out now even though we are still nine days away from the official arrival of spring. Click here to revisit one of JIM's local history articles that includes the old Graded School that sat on this hill until consolidation. - LW
